Common Questions about Nationality

Key details about dual citizenship and processing times.

Do I have to renounce my original nationality?

It depends. Nationals of Ibero-American countries (plus Portugal, Philippines, Andorra, Eq. Guinea) can keep their original passport (Dual Citizenship). Others (USA, UK, etc.) must technically renounce their previous nationality, though in practice, this often just means signing a declaration in Spain.

How long does the approval take?

By law, the Ministry has 1 year to decide. In practice, it currently takes 1 to 2 years on average. We file electronically (telematic submission), which is significantly faster than paper filing.

Can I leave Spain during the process?

Be careful. To apply, your residency must be "continuous". Generally, you shouldn't be out of Spain for more than 3 months in a row (or 6 months total) during the required residency period. Once applied, you can travel, but you must maintain your legal resident status.
