A Spain non-lucrative visa renewal requires sufficient means, maintained and continuing health insurance, and genuine and effective residence in Spain for more than 183 days during the calendar year. Apply during the two months before expiry; a three-month late window exists with possible sanctions. Renewal normally lasts two years, and the new TIE is a separate step.

Key Takeaways
- A Spain non-lucrative visa renewal and the later issue of a new TIE are separate procedures.
- Article 64 requires more than 183 days of genuine and effective residence in Spain during the calendar year, separately from tax residence.
- Financial means must be calculated for the period covered by the renewed authorisation using the current IPREM reference.
- Do not rely on an old euro amount or assume evidence accepted by a consulate will be presented identically to an immigration office in Spain.
- Health coverage, residence history, family circumstances and consistency with Spanish records should be reviewed before filing.
- File within the two months before expiry or, with possible sanctions, within three months after expiry; filing within either window extends the previous authorisation until the procedure is resolved.
- Keep proof of filing and read the decision before arranging the police appointment for the new card.
What a Spain Non-Lucrative Visa Renewal Covers
The initial visa allows entry for the authorised purpose. The underlying non-lucrative residence authorisation then governs the right to reside. The TIE is the physical foreigner identity card that records the status. At renewal, the immigration authority decides whether to extend the authorisation; after approval, the resident completes the police process for a new card.
Confusing these stages causes missed steps. A police appointment does not replace the immigration renewal, and approval of the renewal does not automatically place a new card in the applicant’s hands. The Police’s official TIE information for initial and renewed residence should be checked after the residence decision.
The Legal Framework
Spain’s general immigration statute is Organic Law 4/2000. The detailed current framework is the Immigration Regulation approved by Royal Decree 1155/2024, in force from 20 May 2025.
Online renewal guides based on the previous regulation may contain obsolete forms, timing or eligibility statements. Use them only as background and confirm every operative step against the current rule and official electronic procedure.
Financial Means at Renewal
Under Articles 62 and 64 of the consolidated Royal Decree 1155/2024, the principal applicant needs 400% of monthly IPREM, plus 100% of monthly IPREM for each accompanying family member, for the full renewal period. An ordinary renewal lasts two years, so calculate the requirement across 24 months. If the applicant qualifies for long-term or long-term-EU residence, that status replaces the ordinary two-year renewal.
- Identify the monthly IPREM applicable when filing.
- Calculate 400% for the principal applicant plus 100% for each accompanying family member.
- Apply that monthly requirement across the 24-month ordinary renewal period.
- Document foreign-currency conversion and reconcile the resources to the evidence supplied.
- Show that funds or continuing resources cover the period without working.
The Ministry’s Hoja 7: renewal of non-lucrative temporary residence confirms that means must cover the period being renewed. Use the applicable IPREM rather than an old euro total.
Evidence to review
Depending on the case, the file may draw on bank statements, pension evidence, investment records or other lawful resources. For US, UK and other internationally structured households, the review may also need to reconcile foreign-currency accounts, trusts, companies or portfolio distributions with Spanish tax records and the applicant’s stated non-working status. The authority may assess whether the funds are available, sufficient and coherent. Review:
- Ownership and access to every account relied upon.
- The origin of unusual deposits.
- Whether recurring resources continue for the relevant period.
- Any restrictions on withdrawing or transferring assets.
- Household changes since the initial application.
- Consistency with tax filings and other Spanish records.
A property purchase or other major expense during the first residence period can change liquidity. Check the renewal position before committing funds that were expected to support the next authorisation.
Health Coverage and Other Conditions
Article 64 requires the applicant to have maintained health insurance throughout the authorisation being renewed and to continue that cover. Evidence must therefore cover both the expiring authorisation and the renewal period; buying a new policy at filing does not establish that cover was maintained previously. Check the insurer, territory, insured persons, effective dates, exclusions, waiting periods and cost-sharing. If coverage changed, do not assume the new policy is equivalent to the one used at the consulate.
Also review:
- Passport validity and complete copies.
- Current residence card and identification details.
- Registered address and notification details.
- Family relationship or dependency evidence where relevant.
- Periods outside Spain and evidence of effective residence.
- Any criminal, administrative or status issue arising since approval.
- Applicable application forms and fee evidence.
Keep travel history, passport records and supporting evidence of actual life in Spain. A TIE or municipal registration alone does not establish genuine and effective residence for more than 183 days during the calendar year. Apply this immigration requirement separately from tax-residence tests.
When and How to File
Under Article 64, submit during the two months before the authorisation expires. Filing is also permitted within three months after expiry, but an administrative sanction procedure may follow. A valid renewal application submitted within either statutory window extends the previous authorisation until the procedure is resolved. Keep the filing receipt; booking an appointment alone is not submission.
Hoja 7 specifies form EX-01 and electronic filing through Mercurio. The renewal fee is Modelo 790, code 052, item 2.2.1, “renovación o prórroga de residencia temporal no lucrativa”, payable within ten working days after the application is admitted for processing. Use the current official form and fee generator to obtain the live amount; the later TIE has a separate police fee. Access Mercurio through the official electronic applications directory.
A practical process is:
1. Audit the file before the window opens
Calculate financial means, identify missing evidence, review travel and insurance, and check whether the household or intended activity changed.
2. Confirm the current route
Check the competent office, electronic filing platform, accepted identification method, form version and fee. A representative may file where properly authorised, but the scope should be agreed.
3. Submit an indexed, consistent application
Use clear document names and a short explanation where the financial record or travel history needs context. Keep the signed form, receipt, submission timestamp and full filed bundle.
4. Monitor notifications
Electronic or formal notices can start response periods. Keep contact details and access credentials current and respond precisely to any request for correction or additional evidence.
5. Read the decision
Check the identity details, authorisation type and validity dates. If the decision is adverse or incomplete, obtain advice promptly because challenge periods run from notification.
6. Obtain the new TIE
Within one month of notification of the renewal decision, apply personally for the new TIE at the competent police station. Follow the police instructions for the appointment, fee, photographs, fingerprints and supporting documents.
Residence, Travel and Tax: Keep the Tests Separate
Article 64.2(f) expressly requires genuine and effective residence in Spain for more than 183 days during the calendar year for NLV renewal. Exactly 183 days does not meet that wording. This is an immigration renewal condition, not merely a reference to the tax-residence threshold.
Tax residence remains a separate analysis of presence, economic interests, family circumstances and any applicable treaty. The tax rules on counting sporadic absences must not be assumed to satisfy the immigration requirement for actual residence. Long-term-residence continuity also has its own rules.
Prepare an accurate travel record and have it assessed under the immigration rule relevant to the renewal and any long-term-residence objective. Separately, obtain tax advice based on days, economic interests, family circumstances and any applicable treaty. A renewal file should not make statements that conflict with filed tax or travel records.

Common Renewal Risks
- Treating expiry of the TIE as the only date or procedure that matters.
- Reusing the initial-application euro figure without recalculating the current requirement and renewal period.
- Assuming illiquid assets or unexplained transfers will be accepted at face value.
- Allowing qualifying insurance to lapse or changing to materially different cover without review.
- Filing with an outdated address or failing to monitor formal notifications.
- Ignoring substantial absences until after submission.
- Beginning work without first obtaining a status that authorises it.
- Booking a new-card appointment before the residence authorisation is renewed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is renewal just a new TIE card?
No. The immigration authority first decides whether to renew the residence authorisation. The police card process follows a favourable decision.
How much money is required?
For an ordinary two-year renewal, calculate 400% of monthly IPREM for the principal applicant plus 100% per accompanying family member across 24 months. Use the applicable IPREM and evidence of available or continuing resources; do not rely on an old euro figure.
Can a renewal be filed online?
Yes. Hoja 7 identifies electronic filing through Mercurio using EX-01. Check access credentials and any representative’s authority, and retain the complete filing receipt.
Does spending more than 183 days in Spain guarantee renewal?
No. Article 64 requires more than 183 days of genuine and effective residence in Spain during the calendar year; exactly 183 days is insufficient. Meeting that condition alone does not guarantee renewal: financial means, maintained and continuing insurance, and the other applicable requirements must also be satisfied.
